Bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme changes in mood from mania to
depression. During a manic episode, a person experiences an increase in energy
and a decreased need for sleep. It is distinct period of an elevated, expansive, or
irritable mood state. The complete opposite occurs during a major depressive
episode. The pattern of highs and lows varies for each person making it a complex
disorder to diagnose.
