About Eating Disorders
An eating disorder can negatively affect one's physical and mental health. Anorexia nervosa and
bulimia nervosa are the most common eating disorders. Anorexia nervosa is characterized by low
body weight and body image distortion. Individuals with anorexia are known to take extreme measure
to control their body weight. In most cases, it is caused by a distorted body image and strong fear
of weight gain. Bulimia nervosa consists of a pattern of binge eating followed by guilt and over
compensatory behavior such as crash dieting, over exercising, and purging to compensate for the
excessive calorie intake.
