Catherine Verdeur

My Background

I am a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania. I have completed my doctorate in Clinical Psychology with a concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have over fifteen years of experience working with children, adolescents and their families within child serving systems in Pennsylvania. My approach to psychotherapy is influenced by person-centered and family systems theories. I strongly believe in focusing on child and family strengths and using these strengths to address areas of need.

I have found that children and adolescents are extremely resilient. My experience is that many children present with emotional and behavioral difficulties due to lacking skills or abilities to do things differently, not because they are “bad”. As I psychologist, I work closely with children and parents to develop a collaborative partnership to enhance children’s skill sets so that they get along better with those around them. All children will do well if they can. Children naturally grow and change; some need help along the way. I make it my job to help children and families do this by creating solutions, enhancing skills and changing patterns of relationships.

I have extensive experience providing psychotherapy to children who have experienced or witnessed trauma. While I incorporate many approaches when providing treatment, I have received Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavior Therapy training. I completed my Predoctoral Internship and returned later as a Licensed Psychologist at the agency, Assessment and Treatment Alternatives in Philadelphia, where I conducted Psychosexual Evaluations and provided individual psychotherapy to children and adolescents with histories of abuse.

Much of my work experience has been providing services to children and adolescents within their homes, schools and communities within the community mental health system. I completed my Postdoctorate year at Central Montgomery MH/MR Center where I provided treatment to children and adolescents within the Outpatient and Children’s Partial Hospital Programs. Additionally, I have experience providing treatment to children with behaviors suggesting a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Anxiety, and Depression.

In addition to working at Pliner and Associates, I am currently the Director of Children’s Services at Central Montgomery MH/MR Center. Within this role, I am responsible for the clinical and administrative oversight of mental health programs provided in homes, schools and communities, including Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Services, Extended Assessment, Family Focused Solutions Based Services and Family Based Mental Health Services.
